Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Full-time In-person At Interstellar Lab, our mission is to build a future full of life, on Earth and beyond. We believe in a world where technology enables humans to live in harmony with nature, where biodiversity thrives and expands, and where terrestrial life becomes multi-planetary. To build this future, we design autonomous biospheric systems to grow plants with precision, on Earth and in Space. Our AI-powered BioPods and BioCapsules leverage biosciences to reproduce and optimize growth conditions for a wide variety of high-value plants. On Earth, we pioneer molecular and biofarming, boosting the production of metabolites and bioactive compounds while offering sustainable, traceable, and high-quality natural ingredients to the beauty, fragrance, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries. In space, we collaborate with agencies and private companies to develop biofarming units that advance life science research in microgravity and lay the foundation for future biofactories in space, enabling innovative terrestrial applications and long-duration space missions. About the Role As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will lead the design and development of mechanical systems for Interstellar Lab’s biospheric technologies. You will work across the full product lifecycle, from early concepts and prototyping to manufacturing and industrialization, ensuring that every component meets performance, reliability, and cost objectives. This role requires strong ownership, curiosity, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Responsibilities - Lead mechanical design from concept to production, balancing performance, cost, and manufacturability - Develop 3D CAD models and detailed 2D drawings using Onshape or equivalent software - Collaborate with electrical, software, and systems engineers to ensure integration and serviceability - Manage large assemblies and ensure configuration control across design revisions - Support prototyping, testing, and validation activities to verify design performance - Optimize designs for industrialization and coordinate with manufacturing partners - Ensure compliance with design standards, reliability criteria, and DFM best practices - Participate in design reviews and provide technical guidance within the engineering team Profile / Qualifications - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent - 6+ years of experience in mechanical design, analysis, and manufacturing - Expertise in CAD design (Onshape, SolidWorks, or CATIA) and large assembly management - Solid understanding of materials, mechanical analysis, and industrial processes - Experience with product testing, validation, and design for manufacturability - Comfortable with hands-on prototyping and integration in workshop environments - Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills - Fluent in English, proficiency in French is a plus Equal Opportunity Interstellar Lab is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
